You wont find 5 card draw poker in the casino or online much as newer hybrid varieties are more popular.

However 5 card draw is the basis of all the new games (including the poker found on video slots) So lets learn it here and you the basics covered, before you look at all the variations.

Poker is actually a very simple game to play but can take years to master and is essentially a game of psychology and is one casino game where the best hand does not guarantee you will win.

Lets look at the basics of 5 card draw poker.

Playing the Game of 5 Card Draw Poker

5 Card Draw Poker begins only when all players place an ?ante' or opening bet into the ?pot' (on the table).

There are certain variations concerning the betting, and the game is often nicknamed after these. After the antes are all in, the dealer will deal five cards to each player, all face down.

In 5 Card Draw Poker, all cards are hidden until the hand is over.

Because of this there is no real information on who is holding what.

The only clues you can get, are bet amounts, the ?tells' or nervousness or confidence of the players, and also how many cards each player drew, and of course, there is the prospect any or all of them could be bluffing.

This is really what makes poker so exciting the expectation and anticipation. This especially 5 card draw poker, as you really wont know who is bluffing, who has a good hand, who not, till the very end.

The Games Routine

Now the player to the dealer's left can either bet, with an option to bet ($5 at this point) or to check, meaning to pass, or fold (drop out of the hand).

In case the first player bets, the second player can no longer check. He can his only call, raise or fold. Usually you can only raise 3 times per hand.

After this round of betting in 5 card craw poker, the players remaining in the hand have the option to replace cards in their hand with new cards.

Again, the player to the dealer's left is the first to ?draw' (take new cards for those he has discarded. He can discard from 1 to 4 cards, and in some games all 5). Next, the other players draw in their turn.

The way to draw is for you and select the cards you don't want, remove them and remove them from your hand.

Next you give them to the dealer, at the same time saying how many cards you want ( note you can only take as many cards as you give to the dealer).

The Technique of Replacing Your Cards

As we said above, you can replace 1 to 4 of your cards. Some games even allow 5 but it doesn't really bring an advantage for you to do that in 5 Card Draw Poker.

Even where you draw four new cards all will assume you are holding an ace, so you give away some clue to your hand. In poker, the less information you give the better. Its bad play to ask 4 cards. Therefore, the players will draw from none to 3 cards.

The player who draws no cards is known to be "pat." This means to the other players he has a strong hand like a straight, a flush, or a full house, or of course he could be bluffing.

However there is a kind of bluff that's used to create the impression of strength.

In this situation a player normally could be holding two pair or three of a kind, and will draw no cards.

This is a ploy in which you give up a potentially important chance to improve your hand, in return for creating the appearance of even stronger hand than you have.

In the same thinking you might be holding a completely worthless hand will draw no cards.

You hope to send out a message of strength, and if you combine this with strong betting and raising, you might actually win with all folding before you.

The Conclusion

Now after everyone has drawn their cards we have the second and final round of betting. Here in our example you must bet at $10.

It is the player who opened the betting on the first round who starts the betting on the second round.

After all the betting, calling and raising is done, the hand is over, and if more than one player is left, all the players lay their cards on the table so everyone can see who wins.

There has to be at least one gambling fan of the Cincinnati Reds in America who woke up May 31st after the Reds had lost their first two games of the road trip to the Cubbies and decided the Reds would win that day!

John Q Public then probably decided to take the Big Red Machine in Texas as they played the Astros and by the time they left the Lone Star state had compiled a nice big bankroll as Cinci swept Houston. Next stop was the "Show Me" state of Missouri and could Reds bettor have the guts to play them against the vaunted Cardinals? Why not as Pujols is on the shelf, and the Reds are pounding the ball!

If Reds fan backed them all the way through Houston and St. Louis he is one happy camper today as they have reeled off 7 in a row and head home to Ohio, to face Chicago. Tonight I would be betting with the whole bankroll as the Reds look like a mortal lock.

The Reds are averaging 7.4 runs while batting .303 with 13 home runs during their winning streak, and have not won eight consecutive games since winning 10 straight from June 21-July 1, 1999.

Ken Griffey Jr. did not play Wednesday because of a tight left quadriceps muscle, but Reds manager Jerry Narron expects him back in the lineup for Thursday's contest.

Griffey is batting .471 (16-for-34) with four home runs and eight RBIs during an eight-game hitting streak. Adam Dunn is 11-for-29 (.379) with five home runs in eight games against the Cubs this season, and is 10-for-25 (.400) with six homers and 12 RBIs in his career against Thursday's Cubs starter, Glendon Rusch.

As I mentioned in a previous article, the Boston Red Sox must be kicking themselves for trading Bronson Arroyo to the Reds for Willy Mo Pena as the right hander has been on fire all year with his arm and his bat!

Arroyo (7-2, 2.40) has homered off Rusch twice this season, in an 8-6 win over the Cubs on April 5 at Cincinnati and again in a 9-2 victory at Wrigley Field on April 11.

Arroyo went 3-for-3 with a career-high four RBIs, while allowing two unearned runs and eight hits in six innings in a 7-5 win over Houston on Saturday.

The right-hander has allowed two or fewer runs in seven of his 12 starts, and the Reds are 9-3 when he takes the mound.

Arroyo is 2-0 with a 1.98 ERA in two starts against Chicago this season, both of them wins over Rusch.

The Reds are doing this as well without any offensive contribution from catcher Jason LaRue who is 1-30 in the month of June.

Bob Acton

There is nothing more exciting than watching a good college or professional basketball game. This is particularly true during March Madness or the professional playoffs. Of course, it can be even more fun and exciting if you've got a bet riding on the game or a playoff series. Now it's easier than ever to place your bets by going to an online basketball betting site. At a good online basketball betting site you can register and make your deposits into a secure account. This can be done in a variety of ways and can be done from any location where you have access to the Internet.

A good online basketball site will also help you make the smart bet on a game or series. Its experts look at the data behind the betting odds and betting lines and provide recommendations based on the key factors involved. For example is there an injury to a key player on a team? If the player is going to be in the game the experts will be able to tell you how it might affect his play and that of the team. If the player is going to be out for a while the experts will examine how well the back up player may perform.

The experts at an online basketball betting site know if there are players having a shooting slump and how the players at each position match up against opposing players. They'll look at team records at home and on the road and after factoring everything in they'll make recommendation to help you be successful with your online basketball betting. All the final decisions about which team to bet on and how much to bet is up to you so place your bets and have fun.

Over the past few years, the game of poker has literally exploded. There are millions of players trying out the game for the first time and thousands each day learning the game of poker for the first time.

Internet poker is partly responsible for the boom with players from all over the world logging into the vast array of online poker rooms.

There's a wide choice of sites to play in too with many becoming big brand names over the past few years which has fuelled the poker revolution as more and more players are subjected to the big money advertising that is used to attract new players to the game.

Poker is often featured on TV with big name players battling it out for huge amounts of money in tournaments. Commercials offer attractive incentives to play in many of the online poker sites and the added attraction of being able to play with celebrity players online has brought many into the game.

Poker is of course an easy game to play and a beginner can learn while playing for free online in any of the poker rooms. Within an hour or so, even a player with no prior knowledge of the game can understand the rules and be taking part in what has often been quoted as being the most exciting game online!

However, like most skill based games, although it is easy to learn and start playing, over the long term you'll need to fully understand all aspects of the game in order to consistently play well.

Over the long term, poker is a game of skill with opponents battling their wits against other players. Knowing when to play your cards and when to fold them comes with practice and patience. Being able to read players and note changes in their play is difficult and really only comes with time but when you've mastered the skill there really is nothing stopping you.

Pitting your wits against other players in a mind game of cat and mouse with the skilled player coming out on top adds to the unique appeal of poker.

Want to find out more about playing online poker well? If you do there are a number of options to help you improve your game without having to rely completely on practice and learning by your mistakes.

Investing or borrowing a book or two will explain the game in more depth and online you'll find a plethora of great articles and strategy guides that can be used to improve your play quickly, which cuts out a lot of the initial practice time that you would otherwise require.

Get good and those tournaments, either on or offline start to seem more obtainable and inviting. Try out some small, online poker tournaments before progressing to the next stage and if you're good enough, poker stardom.

The NFL's first Sunday Night Football game is an intriguing matchup as Peyton squares off against Eli in a Manning family reunion game. This will mark the first game in NFL history with brother's starting at quarterback. But as one will eventually fall to the other, their may be some love lost.

On paper, Peyton has the overwhelming edge with 3 AFC South Titles and back to back MVP Awards in 2004 and 2005. Eli has just 23 career starts, but he led the Giants back to the playoffs last season for the first time in 3 years. For the media, this game is Peyton vs. Eli, but in reality, it's the Colts vs. Giants.

We all remember Indy's amazing 13 game winning streak last season and their high-octane offense, but we forget that the Giants scored the second most points in franchise history. New York returns all 11 starters from last year's playoff team including Tiki Barber, who was the difference maker last season. The Colts are about to find out how valuable Edgerrin James was in the backfield last season as Dominic Rhodes and Joseph Addai, who are expected to share time, will still have to prove themselves.

The Giants made huge off season moves on the defensive side of the football bringing in LaVar Arrington, to play alongside a now healthy Antonio Pierce, as well as defensive backs Sam Madison, R.W. McQuarters, and Will Demps. Arrington should have no problem fitting in and I expect him to return to the Pro Bowl. The new faces in the defensive backfield will get broken in in a hurry against the likes of Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison. With Pro Bowlers Strahan and Umenyiora coming off the ends, the Giants should be able to get some pressure on Peyton Manning which will help out the secondary.

The Colts have a Pro Bowl defensive end of their own in Dwight Freeney and his running mate Robert Mathis, who finished the 2005 season with 11.5 sacks and 8 forced fumbles. Eli will be forced to deal with the same pressure off the corner Sunday night. Which ever quarterback is able to do a better job of stepping up in the pocket could go along way in deciding this game.

New York's home field advantage and the fact that they return all 11 offensive starters speaks loudly. New faces on defense could be a problem in the early going as they'll have to adjust to a new system. You don't here a lot about Indy's "D" because their offense has been so good, but they are a solid unit. The loss of Edgerrin James could be crucial.

Ultimately, this one will be an offensive battle. Both teams have great offenses with great playmakers. Indy's receivers are slightly better, but New York has an advantage on the ground. I have done my homework on Sunday Night's marquee matchup and I'm ready to deliver a big play on the big stage.

The NIT and the NCAA Tournament both begin tonight as 14 teams start play in the National Invitation Tournement, while Hampton and Monmouth officially start the NCAA Tournament by participating in the play-in game.

Below is a look at both college basketball games on ESPN national television for Tuesday night.

NCAA Tournament

HAMPTON vs. MONMOUTH (-4, 124) (at Dayton, OH) (ESPN)

It is no surprise that Hampton is meeting Monmouth in the play-in game as these two clubs have the two weakest RPI's in this year's tournament. Hampton is the worst team in the Field of 65 with a RPI of 284 and the Pirates needed to win four games in four days last week in the Mid-Eastern Conference tournament. The Pirates won outright in the finals, 60-56, as a 5-point underdog versus the top team in the conference, Delaware State, who had a solid RPI of 123.

Hampton started the season just 1-7 SU as they were missing some key players in November and December; however the Pirates finished with a solid 15-8 SU run over their past twenty-three games. Hampton played an incredibly weak schedule as they faced only seven teams ranked in the RPI top 200 and they went just 2-5 SU in those seven games.

Monmouth also pulled an upset in their conference tournament and beat the top two teams, Central Connecticut State and Fairleigh Dickinson, to ensure a bid. Monmouth has the second worst RPI in the Field of 65 this year. Monmouth's RPI is 144 and they were 7-8 SU versus the top 200 opponents they faced.

Both teams have solid defenses as each club lead their conferences in field goal percentage allowed. Hampton allowed just 39.1 percent and Monmouth permitted only 40.8 percent in conference games this season.

NIT

VIRGINIA at STANFORD (-4 ½, 129 ½) (ESPN)

Both Virginia and Stanford have struggled down the stretch as Cavaliers were 1-4 SU (1-3-1 ATS) over the past five games while Stanford was 2-4 SU (1-5 ATS) over their final six games.

There have been no recent head-to-head meetings between these squads; however they did have three common opponents this season (Gonzaga, Virginia Tech, and Arizona). Virginia lost both games versus Arizona and Gonzaga and was 3-0 SU/ATS in three meetings versus in-state rival Virginia Tech, including a recent win in the ACC Tournament last Thursday.

Stanford lost both games versus Gonzaga and Virginia Tech and also went 0-3 SU (1-2 ATS) in three meetings versus conference rival Arizona, including a loss last Thursday in the PAC 10 Tournament.

Overall, Virginia was 3-2 SU (4-1 ATS) against common opponents this season, while Stanford was 0-5 SU (2-3 ATS) in those same games. Virginia was outscored by an average score of 63-69 per game and outshot 43-45 percent from the field, while Stanford lost by average score of 70-76, but outshot their opponents 46-45 percent overall.

Stanford has the edge of playing this game on their home court, where the Cardinal were 10-3 SU this season. Virginia was just 4-11 SU away from home, but the Cavaliers do have a slightly higher RPI of 80, while Stanford finished with a RPI of 86. Virginia also fared better against quality teams, going 5-12 SU versus the RPI Top 100, while Stanford was just 2-9 SU versus that same level of competition.

With so much being talked about the problems of gambling addiction we have lost sight of the fact that gambling can actually be a fun way to past the time whether it's online card games like poker or going to the casino to play roulette or indulging in some sport betting on horses or your favourite football or basket ball team.

That's it, a way to past the time, like going to the movies or the theatre or what ever. It is not a way to make money, if it were, casinos and book makers would go out of business a few days after opening. If you are thinking about gambling to make money and you live in Gt Britain then the safest way to gamble is to buy premium bonds where at least you get your money back when you want it, the only thing you lose is the interest you would have earned if you had put it in a savings account.

The only way to view gambling is to say to yourself I am going spend this amount of money having some fun and when it is gone I am gong to stop and do it. Never chase your losses, lying to yourself that just another few hands and you'll get it all back. It can happen but the odds are greatly stacked against it. You don't want to end up like the famous courtesan La Belle Ortero who gambled away her $25 million fortune and died in poverty.

The proliferation of online gambling sites has been tremendous; it has never been so easy to lose your money. Once you had to visit a casino, betting office or go to a track but now you only have to click your mouse to have a game of poker or roulette or whatever. Remember when you bet online nobody can see how much you lose.

That said, some women can find it a positive advantage when playing online card games because they can choose to have a male nickname which, they feel, gives them a slight edge as the male players won't think about their gender in the playing strategy.

There is nothing like the feeling of when you win a big pot at poker, your number comes up in roulette or your horse romps home with long odds but remember the saying of sporting endeavours which is ten times more important when it comes to gambling, 'it's not the winning that's important, it's the taking part'.Read more about gambling and game at: http://www.yourpower2be.com/gamblingandgames.html

Card counting does put the odds in the favor of blackjack players however there are common misconceptions about card counting that can and do cause players to lose.

If you want to win at blackjack and do card counting then it is important you don't believe these 4 myths:

The More complicated the method the better

A card counting system that is complicated does NOT guarantee it will be more successful than a simpler one there is no link between how complicated a system is and its success.

It's the logic that the card counting system is based upon that is important.

There are highly complicated theories we have seen that take weeks to learn, that are less effective than a simple strategy you can learn in around 15 minutes.

Don't be fooled by sales pitches, the reality sometimes does not match the hype.

Card counting is predictive

Card counting, does not allow blackjack players to predict with certainty what card will be dealt out of the deck next. It is simply a probability theory

Blackjack card counting tries to crudely calculate the odds of various cards coming out of the deck.

There are huge number of permutations, so even if the odds are in your favor doesn't mean you are going to win in the short term due to the small edge you are playing with.

Card counting is quick an easy way to make profits

Blackjack players who card count can play with a positive edge and the odds in their favor longer term but this does not mean that profits will be made easily or regularly.

Anything can and does happen in the short term and a player will have to play for literally thousands of hours to see the positive expectation take affect.

Keep in mind we are only talking a small edge of around 1.5%, the smallness of the edge will see wildly fluctuating results in the short term and any blackjack player needs to be prepared with an adequate bankroll.

Blackjack card counting doesn't work in all casinos!

Why? Because they have different rules, so you need to be very careful that you pick a game with the rules as much in favor of players as possible.

Here are some rules that are favorable to the player and the affect they have longer term in terms of odds of success.

Early surrender - +0.62%

Late surrender Single deck +0.02%

Double down after splitting +0.13%

Drawing to split aces +0.14%

Re splitting of aces +0.03%

Double down cards any number +0.20%

2:1 payoff blackjack +2.32%

Here are some rules that are unfavorable to the player.

2 decks (v single) -0.35%

4 decks (v single) -0.51%

6 decks (v single) -0.60%

pairs no re splitting -0.05%

No doubling on hard 11 -0.89%

No doubling on hard 10 -0.56%

No doubling on hard 9 -0.14%

No doubling soft hands -0.14%

Dealer hits soft 17 -0.20%

Dealer takes no hole card -0.13%

As you can see the rules of the game are very important and you need to pay with the most favorable ones you can find.

Long term profits blackjack card counting

If you are going to try and make profits card counting you need to take note of all the above and be prepared to play for long periods, with an adequate bankroll and have a system your comfortable with.

Do that and your well on the way to making big profits from blackjack!
